Andhra Pradesh’s capital will be Visakhapatnam, and Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy will move there “in the months to come,” he announced today. This is despite the High Court’s ruling last year that it cannot pass legislation for that; the other two capitals are Kurnool and the current capital Amaravati.

The YSRCP government of Mr. Reddy has appealed the case, which is currently before the Supreme Court.
The claim about Visakhapatnam was made by Mr. Reddy, who has continuously favoured the coastal city as the Executive Capital while promoting an investment convention that would be held there. He has already stated that he would start there.
He remarked, announcing the world summit set for March 3 and 4, “Here I am to invite you, to Visakhapatnam, which is going to be our capital in the days to come.” However, he continued, “I myself will be shifting over to Visakhapatnam in the months to come,” without giving a specific timeframe.
Hyderabad was chosen as the new state’s capital when Telangana was split off from Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
Amaravati, in the Vijayawada-Guntu region on the banks of the river Krishna, was to become the new capital, according to the Andhra government of 2015, which was led by TDP’s N Chandrababu Naidu and functioning out of Hyderabad in the interim.
The state then intended to have three capital cities in 2020: Kurnool for the judiciary, Amaravati for the legislative, and Visakhapatnam for the administration.
Later, that law was retracted, and Amaravati officially remained the capital.
Amaravati is the site of an alleged land scam, for which Mr. Reddy’s party, the YSRCP, has called for an investigation against Mr. Naidu, the outgoing chief minister.
According to Mr. Reddy’s party, some individuals who were informed beforehand where the new capital would be located bought properties there in anticipation of a future economic boom. The state administration said in a submission to the Center that such individuals purchased more than 4,000 acres in 2014.
While denying any wrongdoing, N Chandrababu Naidu had questioned why the YSRCP government was selling off the land it had initially purchased from farmers to erect a new capital. The AP Capital Region Development Authority’s choice to lease out the residential towers—built for government employees—to private companies was especially criticised a few months ago by the Leader of the Opposition.
The coastal city of Visakhapatnam, frequently shortened to Vizag, is the largest and most populated city in Andhra Pradesh and is preferred as the state’s capital by Chief Minister Jagan Reddy. It is India’s second largest city on the east coast after Chennai, the state capital of Tamil Nadu.
