As many as 10,000 employees could receive pink slips from the e-commerce behemoth due to business and technological decisions. According to reports, thousands of people who work in the part of the device that houses Alexa, as well as its retail sector and human resources, would be impacted by Amazon’s downsizing. The WSJ reports that the Alexa company has experienced $5 billion in yearly losses.
Amazon employed approximately 1.6 million full-time and part-time employees as of December 31, and the reported layoffs would account for 3% of Amazon’s corporate staff and less than 1% of its global workforce. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, recently said that the US economy is either in a recession or is on its way to one.
