According to a Financial Times report published on Wednesday, Apple has informed its component suppliers that it prefers to purchase batteries for the next iPhone 16 from Indian facilities. This move is consistent with the IT giant’s plan to diversify its supply chain, increase its dependence on Indian manufacturing capabilities, and distance itself from China. It was not possible for Business Today to independently confirm this information.
A brief about Apple instructed component vendors to source Indian iPhone 16 batteries
The report claims that companies that make batteries, including Desay in China, have been urged to build new plants in India. In addition, Simplo Technology, an Apple supplier of Taiwanese batteries, has been compelled to increase its Indian production capacity in order to fulfill forthcoming orders.
The government and manufacturers have been in talks about putting this rule into effect by June 2025. Although Samsung and the majority of manufacturers have consented to comply, Apple has not yet endorsed the plan.
India plans to implement similar measures by June 2025, with the EU enforcing its charging port laws taking effect in December 2024. Apple reportedly urged officials to exempt current iPhone models from the regulation during a closed-door meeting chaired by the IT ministry on November 28, citing potential challenges in meeting production targets set under the nation’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme.
