Additionally, it means that holders of Indian passports require a visa in order to access 177 countries throughout the world, including China, Japan, Russia, the United States, and the entirety of the European Union.

Japan was displaced by Singapore in the Henley Passport Index 2023 as the nation with the most powerful passport, allowing visa-free travel to 192 international locations.

Japan, which topped the list for five years, is now in third place. The United States, which formerly topped the list over ten years ago, dropped two spots to eighth position. Following a Brexit-related decline, the UK climbed two spots to fourth, a spot it last held in 2017.

The International Air Transport Association’s statistics are used to calculate Henley’s ranking. The methodology is different from previous passport indexes, such as the one released by financial advisory Arton Capital last year that ranked the United Arab Emirates first.
