For individuals who use more than 200 units a month, the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government has increased power costs by Rs 2.89 per unit throughout the state. Karnataka’s CM Siddaramaiah declared that the state would put into effect the “Gruha Jyoti scheme,” which will provide all families with free electricity up to 200 units per month.

“We will also give people who live in rental housing free power (up to 200 units). Those in need who use less than 200 units of electricity will not be responsible for paying the bills. The tenants will be covered by this (plan),” Siddaramaiah informed the press.

On Monday, information on the plan, its implementation, and the price increases was released. As of July 1, the revised prices will be in effect.

Additionally, the CM had stated on Monday, “We are providing free power to help the State’s poor and middle-class citizens who are in need. We’ve given away 10% more free electricity than is typically used in a year. The State’s citizens have embraced and welcomed this.

Recall that prior to the Karnataka Assembly Elections, the Congress party made a conditionless pledge of a free electricity programme. The statement reportedly sparked a lot of criticism from the opposition, who organised demonstrations in Bengaluru, Chikkaballapura, Mysuru, and Davangere, according to a report in the Economic Times.

In the previous two months, there have been two price increases. The cost of power increased by 70 paisa per unit in May. To make up for a revenue shortfall of Rs 8,951 crore, Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) proposed a 16.38% increase (139 paisa per unit) in their 2022 pricing proposal.
