According to Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act of 1961, everyone who is eligible for both an Aadhaar card and a PAN card must link them by March 31. Both visiting the Income Tax e-filing portal and sending an SMS allow taxpayers to check the status of their PAN-Aadhaar linkage.

Here’s how to check the status of PAN-Aadhaar linkage online.

Step 1: First, go to the income tax e-filing website.

Step 2: On the site homepage, select “Quick Links.” After that, choose “Aadhaar status.”

Step 3: A page with two fields for entering your PAN and Aadhaar numbers will be redirected to you. Enter your Details & Hit Validate.

Step 4: After doing this, the server will check the PAN-Aadhaar link’s status and display a pop-up message.

Step 5: If both cards are linked, the message will read, “Your PAN is already linked to given Aadhaar.”

Step 6: The message “PAN not linked with Aadhaar” will appear if your PAN and Aadhaar cards are not linked. To link your Aadhaar with PAN, kindly click “Link Aadhaar.”

Step 7: The taxpayer will see this message on their window if the link is active, “Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation. Please visit the “Link Aadhaar Status” link on the homepage later to check the status.

How you can check PAN-Aadhaar linking status via SMS?

The Income Tax Department now offers an SMS check for the PAN-Aadhaar connecting status. Taxpayers must do this by sending an SMS to 56161 or 567678. If both cards are linked, the message will say, “Aadhaar is already associated with PAN in ITD Database.”

The message “Your Aadhaar is not associated with PAN in ITD Database” will appear if the PAN and Aadhaar cards are not linked. We appreciate you using our services.

The following repercussions will occur if taxpayers fail to link their PAN and Aadhaar cards by June 30: 

1. No refund will be given for such PANs.

3. As stated in the Income Tax Act of 1961, TDS and TCS must be taken out of payments or collected at a higher rate.
