One of the impacted Subway locations at a Delhi airport terminal showed a sign apologizing for the “Temporary Unavailability of TOMATOES,” explaining that they were unable to find a sufficient supply that matched their quality standards.
Customers were reassured by the store that efforts are being made to quickly replenish tomato supplies.
Everstone Group’s Culinary Brands, the franchisee for around 200 of India’s 800 Subway locations, has not made any additional statements regarding the situation. Uncertainty exists regarding the precise number of outlets affected by this choice.
While other Subway locations in India still serve tomatoes, at least two locations—one each in New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Chennai—have already stopped doing so because of the vegetable’s expensive price. One Subway employee told the news agency, “It’s very expensive.”
Tomatoes were also removed from the menu at McDonald’s locations across the nation a few weeks ago owing to “quality issues”.
Other international restaurant companies like Domino’s and KFC have also introduced more affordable options in the nation, showing that the impact of rising pricing has gone beyond Subway.
Due to increasing inflation rates, people are cutting back on their spending at this time. Targeting the budget-conscious Indian market, Domino’s recently launched a seven-inch pizza for Rs 49, the brand’s cheapest option offered anywhere in the globe.
