Swiggy’s research of orders placed between January 2023 and June 15, 2023 showed that there has been an increase in biryani orders of 8.26% over the previous five and a half months compared to the same time in 2022. More than 28 thousand restaurants exclusively serve biryani, while over 2.6 lakh eateries provide it through the network. People around the nation are making 219 orders every minute for their favourite cuisine, which ranges from the savoury Malabar Biryani to the fiery Hyderabadi Dum Biryani and the flavorful Kolkata Biryani.

The official statement from Swiggy reads, “People across the country placed 219 orders per minute for their favourite dish, from the flavorful Kolkata Biryani to the fragrant Malabar Biryani, and from the aromatic Lucknowi Biryani to the spicy Hyderabadi Dum Biryani.”

According to Swiggy’s data, more than 2.6 lakh restaurants offer biryani through their platform nationwide, with more than 28,000 restaurants specialising in offering biryani only. These businesses are concentrated in the cities with the highest concentration of restaurants selling biryani. Interestingly, according to Swiggy’s data, Hyderabad leads the nation in biryani consumption, with a staggering 7.2 million orders placed up until June of this year. Bangalore came in second with about 5 million orders, and Chennai took third with nearly 3 million.

The data also shows that Dum Biryani, with over 6.2 million orders and almost 85 varieties, is the most popular option. With 3.5 million orders, Hyderabadi Biryani comes in second, and Biryani Rice follows with almost 2.8 million. A biryani enthusiast in Chennai reportedly spent almost Rs. 31,532 on a single order of the dish.
