Details about Sonia Gandhi discusses ‘end of innings’- The tale of how the reluctant politician became a key figure in the Congress

At the All India Congress Committee (AICC) plenary in Raipur, Sonia had just finished speaking before a resolution was voted praising her for her contributions to the party. It also demonstrates how old I’ve grown and how the next generation must now advance under Kharge ji’s guidance, Gandhi said.

After that, her party moved quickly to emphasise that Sonia was speaking about the conclusion of her term as party president and not her decision to leave politics.

The first time Sonia Gandhi was president of the Congress was almost 25 years ago. The Congress was in shambles in 1998 when the reluctant politician initially seized control of the party. Two of its ‘natural’ leaders had been killed within ten years, the party had just lost the Lok Sabha election, and it was beset by infighting and defections. Only three states—Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Mizoram—were under its control. Before beginning the disgraceful decline since 2014, the party under her would go on to win two consecutive general elections and dominate as many as 16 states at one point in the 2000s.
