A brief about now, WhatsApp users have a 15-minute window in which to amend transmitted messages

WhatsApp, a messaging service owned by Meta, launched a much-anticipated feature on Monday that lets users edit messages up to 15 minutes after sending them.

Meta Platforms’ CEO Mark Zuckerberg made this announcement on Facebook.

Long-pressing the message and selecting “edit” from the menu allows users to update it. A message that has been edited will have the “edited” tag next to it, but the recipient might not be able to see the modification history.

The functionality has begun to roll out, and in the upcoming weeks, it will be accessible to everyone.

We’re thrilled that you will now have more control over your discussions, including the ability to edit typos or provide extra information. Within 15 minutes of sending the message, you must tap and hold it for a few seconds before choosing the “Edit” option from the menu, the business explained in a blog post.

According to WhatsApp, “your messages and the edits will be protected by end-to-end encryption, as with all personal messages, media, and calls.”

Users have had the option to edit messages on Telegram and Signal, two of WhatsApp’s rivals. Even after a message has been received, Telegram gives users a 48-hour window to edit it. Users of WhatsApp could only remove messages up until this point, though.

The functionality will provide users the possibility to rephrase a message in addition to providing the option to fix spelling errors or add context.
