At the Auto Expo 2023, Tata Motors introduced the long-rumored Tata Sierra EV in addition to the Tata Harrier EV, extending its lineup of electric SUVs in India.

In-depth details about Tata Sierra EV SUV unveiled at Auto Expo 2023:

Given the significance of these vehicles, Tata Motors introduced three new SUVs at the Auto Expo 2023, and the stall was hopping with activity. Editor Sirish Chandran spoke with the top executives of various departments at Tata Motors after experiencing these SUVs, namely the Tata Sierra EV, Tata Harrier EV, and Tata Curvv at the Auto Expo, to respond to your inquiries and offer an in-depth analysis of what we can anticipate with these upcoming Tata SUVs. We were forced to focus on the Tata Sierra first due to its extreme popularity.

According to Vivek Srivatsa, Head, of Marketing, Sales and Service Strategy, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., the Tata Curvv will be introduced before the Sierra arrives in 2025. So, the launch of the Sierra EV is two years away.

The new Sierra EV’s design pays homage to the original, and through the application of cunning techniques, the famous SUV form—complete with its glasshouse—has been made into a production vehicle. For example, the body colour of the B-pillar gives the roof graphic a wraparound aspect.

The Sierra was advertised as an electric vehicle during the Auto Expo, and the vehicle itself was an EV with a label indicating such on the side. Tata’s Gen 2 architecture will serve as the foundation for the Sierra EV. Tata uses three different platforms for their electric cars. The Tata Nexon EV/EV Max, the Tigor EV, and the Tiago EV are just a few examples of Gen 1 architectures, which are essentially existing platforms that have been electrified.

The Gen 2 architectures are also current platforms, but they have undergone extensive reengineering to better package the electric drivetrain, free up more space, and include updates for the impending safety standards. This Gen 2 architecture is based on Tata Altroz’s X4 platform, which is currently known as the Sigma platform for EVs. Since the X4 platform is the same ALFA architecture as the Altroz, an ICE powertrain can be accommodated.

To avoid having a stubby nose like a pure EV, such as a Kia EV6, the Sierra EV has a large bonnet instead. The versatility of the Gen 2 designs’ three engine options—a gasoline, diesel, or electric one—is what makes them so attractive. The Sierra will thus be equipped with both ICE and EV powertrains.
