Zoho Company History

The zoho.com domain was bought sometime in 2002. In 2009, changed its name to Zoho Corp. We were founded sometime between late 1995 and early 1996.

The business’s previous name from 1996 until 2009 was AdventNet, Inc., and its initial offering was network management software.

In 2001, AdventNet increased its activities in Japan and moved its attention to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

Early in 1998, when they were able to pay themselves modest salaries and already had a revenue run rate of well over $500,000 per year, Zoho declared they were entering a legitimate business.

Back in 1995, there were two bootstrapped businesses—one in the US and one in India. My brothers Shailesh Kumar, who currently oversees our Engineering department and Zoho Labs, and Kumar Vembu, who is the founder and CEO of GoFrugal and is actively involved in Zoho Corp., launched a bootstrapped business at home in the Chennai, India suburb of East Tambaram.

The remaining parts of history are very well known.

Even in 1998, when Zoho Corp had sales of $1 million, the company made a sizable investment in R&D. We made a similar investment in 2003–2005 to bootstrap our next venture.

In January 2020, Zoho had more than 50 million users. The business declared it had more than 80 million users in July 2022.

Zoho Growth and Revenue

The demand for digital transformation today is greater than the trend. The SaaS market expanded by 24% in 2021, and according to International Data Corporation, it will reach a value of 1.3 trillion dollars by 2030. That isn’t even ten years away!

This indicates that there is space for development and growth. For us, success goes beyond our remaining in business.

The majority of Chennai-based Zoho’s income comes from the sale of licenses for its cloud software suite and from software subscription fees paid by its users in 12 different countries.

The company’s largest operating sector in terms of collections—which accounts for 58% of annual revenues—is the enterprise IT management software.

The overall size of Zoho increased by 77% in 2021. The rental income Zoho received from its IT Parks, which is included in other operational revenues, decreased by 39.5% to Rs 16.7 crore from Rs 27.6 crore gained during the FY20 pre-Covid period.

Continental Europe came in second, contributing $15.8 million ($297.8 million), or 12% of sales. China is among Zoho’s smallest markets, accounting for just 4.7% of its operational revenues, or Rs 250.5 crore ($33.4 Mn) originating from here.

Zoho Funding

The founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, Sridhar Vembu, is renowned for his unassuming demeanor and for believing that Indian engineering talent from tiny villages can generate software of the highest caliber. Zoho Corporation has been a global technology provider for 25 years.

An intriguing anecdote: the domain name Zoho was first registered by a US-based hotel firm that had funded $53 million in 1999 to expand. Unfortunately, for this hotel aggregator, which went into liquidation during the years 2000–2001, the fantastical tale of high valuations turned out to be a nightmare. The domain name was acquired by Sridhar and his colleagues from the court overseeing the liquidation process because they adored it.

By 2010, they had changed the company’s name to Zoho Corp. by using the domain to launch a number of office products for the parent company, AdventNet Technologies. The SaaS industry had already generated $100 million in sales by that point, driving companies like Freshworks and all the other SaaS-based firms to emerge from India and have an impact on the world.
