Odisha would scrap 20.4 lakh vehicles

Odisha’s Commerce and Transport Minister Tukuni Sahu informed the House that 20.4 lakh automobiles older than 15 years will be scrapped. According to the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility Policy 2022, the Transport Minister stated in a written response to an unstarred question from BJP MLA Kusum Tete that the state government has decided to outlaw automobiles with no fitness from March 15, 2023.

Motorcycles/scooters, 2,37 lakh mopeds, 1.54 lakh goods carriers, 1.09 lakh cars, 45,157 tractors, 39,588 trailers, 37,359 auto rickshaws, 31,298 minibuses, 12,369 buses, 3,010 agricultural tractors, and 2,034 dumpers are among the vehicles to be trashed.

According to the statement read out in the House, there are 80,20,200 automobiles on the road in the state that have fitness certificates. However, unfit government cars will be scrapped in the first phase, and private vehicles older than 15 years will be scrapped progressively.

The state government has directed that all government vehicles older than 15 years be scrapped by March 31. After dismantling the vehicles, the departments will have to notify the relevant RTOs.

Odisha has 16,369 government-owned vehicles under 15 years old, 300 vehicles between 15 and 20 years old, and 263 vehicles above 20 years old.
